Ontario has launched a pilot program introducing restricted towing zones on major highways in the Greater Toronto Area. This initiative aims to enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and protect drivers from predatory towing practices.
Starting December 13, 2021, the program designates specific zones on Highways 401, 400, 427, 409, and the QEW where only authorized towing companies can operate. These companies have undergone thorough vetting and are required to adhere to standardized pricing and invoicing, ensuring transparency and fairness for drivers.
The new rules come in response to issues such as violence and overcharging in the towing industry. By limiting operations to approved companies, the government seeks to prevent unauthorized tow trucks from exploiting drivers in need. This move is part of a broader effort to overhaul the towing industry and ensure that tow operators have proper training and equipment.
Drivers in these restricted zones are advised to call 911 in emergencies or 511 for non-emergency towing services. The program also includes provisions for roadside assistance programs like CAA to continue operating under certain conditions.
While some tow truck operators have expressed concerns about the impact on competition, the Provincial Towing Association of Ontario views the initiative as a positive step toward industry reform. The program is expected to bring long-term benefits by improving service quality and ensuring reasonable towing rates.
